The growth of the character Ayla shows very dramatically in this first novel, especially if you consider she was only about 11 or so when she had her first child. In a way its perfect for around that age, because its all about struggling for acceptance and caverjario to learn the social norms of a society. However, I think Ayla did have enough faults, and was legitimately punished enough that I didn’t focus on it too much.

This was completely out of my comfort zone. This is the book that started me reading The story is an interesting one, beginning with an earthquake to finds our main character, a Cro-Magnon child lost at about 5 years old.

Library resources about The Clan of the Cave Bear. Seeing as people shelved this as “romance”, I started it and expected you know, a love story. The sex scenes didn’t corrupt me. The idea of gods and Totem animals as guiding factors for life certainly seem plausible as belief systems for societies like this one, and even the rituals and strange occurrences could relate to magic.

You still don’t understand, do you? It takes her much longer to train Ayla than it will her own daughter, Uba, since Ayla does not possess the memories of the Clan. Again, this happens to Ayla quite a bit, in a rather uncomfortable rape montage nothing is too graphic, however. It’s amazing the details of the flora, fauna and terrain of the prehistoric earth in general that was described in such a way that the reader really is left feeling as if this novel was part story, part history lesson.

It made me really start to think how things that seem so basic and simple and easy to us today are the products of years and ages of evolution and development from beings much like these.
Obviously, my own reaction falls at the favorable end of the spectrum. I couldn’t put it down. There is some minor gore in hunting scene and one results in the death or a clan member. You did everything you could to her, you even cursed her.
The majority of the issues that I may have had with the book were petty and not worth mentioning. How old should you caverbario to read this book?

I was never bored. She is proud, strong, very intelligent, and able to make leaps of logic that often get her into trouble with her adopted people. Hearing that song would remind me that I needed to read the book.
Not even 10 stars is enough for this book. I’m giving it 5 stars. Amazon Advertising Find, attract, and engage customers. Some readers may find the depictions of woman to be disturbing and several character engaging in physical assaults on women. It’s very fortunate for Ayla that these are the kind people she ends up with. This series is like taking a step back in time and it feels like you have experienced everything that Ayla goes through right alongside her.
But I am Anxiously awaiting book 2 to come in the mail. I wonder if it would hold up as well now, but I almost want to leave it as I remember it just in case. This book is one of a kind. View all 29 comments.
